Episode 12 – This week’s guest is Michael Goodchild, Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Goodchild coined the term Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) and has been instrumental in shaping the science of Geography. He talks with James and Madeline about the future of digital earths (e.g., Google Earth), VGI, and more. At one point, Professor Goodchild relates how London cabbies, who must memorize all the streets of their city to get a license, have brains with larger memory centers, and wonders how the brains of most people will change as they increasingly rely on navigation devices instead of mental maps.
